Pitfalls: Disco attacks (1)
In this lesson, material can be gained thanks to a discovered attack. However, it is important to bear in mind that the other player can get by with the basic forms of defence: move away, guard, capture and interpose.
What do you have to do?
Win material by performing a discovered attack. Be careful not to give the other person a chance to defend.
1.Nc5 or 1.Nf4 ? Both moves attack the queen, with the bishop looking at the knight.
On 1.Nc5 (red arrow), black can defend by combining moving away and guarding in one move: 1...Qd5! On 2.Bxc4, 2...Qxc4 follows.
What is good is 1.Nf4! Not only are black's knight and queen attacked; white also prevents the queen from continuing to cover the knight by taking away square d5! If the queen leaves, white plays 2.Bxc4.
